Transgargano Bike.
Cycling Italy's Spur
Transgargano is the bike experience for discovering the Gargano promontory in Puglia, a national park surrounded by deep blue sea, and its secret hinterland.
HIGHLIGHTS
The mild weather on the Adriatic coast
Like the Amalfi Coast or the Garda Lake, but not so busy …
Sea and Mountain = relax and adventure
How does it work?
Transgargano is not a holiday, it’s a trekking through a wild paradise.
There are three versions. A short-break one (6 days), a longer one (1 week) and the grand traverse from 10 days to 2 weeks. The itinerary is a round tour (from A to B, from B to C), which means: every day you will arrive in a different village, and the day after you’ll leave your accommodation and set for a new destination.
Transgargano is available in three styles: A guided tour, in a group with a guide, or a self-guided one, with luggage transport, GPS routing + roadbook, phone assistance and a welcome meeting with our staff. Also, we offer an unsupported version, in which you will be completely autonomous with your own bike (or you hire one with us), GPS route + roadbook with the English description of all the attractions along the route, discount vouchers on affiliated shops, entrance tickets or accommodations and restaurants.
Programme
1. DAY: ARRIVAL
Check-in at the accommodation, welcome-meeeting with our staff and eventual delivery of hired bikes
2. DAY: FROM MATTINATA TO FORESTA UMBRA (35 km, 800 meters ascent)
Scients of Mediterranean maquis, breathtaking panoramas on the Adriatic Sea and challenging ups and downs. This is gonna be the scenario in which you will ride the distance of about 35 km from the coast to the Green Heart of the Gargano National Park, the Foresta Umbra, whose beechwood was declared a few years ago UNESCO site for its unique Alpine environment in a Mediterranean location.
Accommodation in the center of the Foresta Umbra.
3. DAY: FROM FORESTA UMBRA TO VIESTE (30 km, mostly downhill)
After an energizing breakfast, you will leave the Shady Forest, a place full of shade you won’t expect in Puglia. That’s why Gargano is called the Sun Mountain. You will ride past sandy beaches, cliffs and bays, to finally reach the gorgeous city of Vieste.
Your accommodation will be in Vieste close to the city center or in the countryside (you can choose).
4. DAY: FREE
On this day you will be free to take your time and live like the locals do or you can go for a boat excursion to the Tremiti Islands. The bikes are anyway at your disposal.
Same accommodation as the earlier day.
5. DAY: VIESTE TO MATTINATA (35 km, 800 meters ascent)
The southern coast of the Gargano from Vieste to Mattinata will pack you with its dramatic coast and views on this paradise where the green of the woods dives into the deep blue sea.
Accommodation in the town of Mattinata.
6. DAY: DEPARTURE
End of services after breakfast and departure
(The first 4 days are the same as the basic program)
5. DAY: FROM VIESTE TO VICO DEL GARGANO (45 km, 600 meters ascent)
You will leave Vieste and ride along the stunning coastline from Vieste to Peschici, taking your time to see the lonely bays and the trabucchi historical fishing machines. You can have lunch in Peschici and walk in the center until the castle’s balcony, where you can extend the gaze to your next photo-stops: Monte Pucci and Baia di Calenella. After Peschici, you will have to climb once more the mountain. On a narrow road, you’ll reach the hills where the town of Vico del Gargano (462 meters a.s.l.) lays. Here you have a few interesting things to do, like visiting the underground old olive oil mill, Maria’s ancient loom and going for a stroll in the middle-aged alleys.
Accommodation in the town of Vico.
6. DAY: FROM VICO TO CAGNANO VARANO (45 km, 200 meters ascent)
Leaving St. Valentine’s town Vico del Gargano won’t be easy, there’s so much to discover, but the ride must go on! Today you will head in the direction of the Varano Lake. Only a narrow stripe mainland divides this lagoon from the sea, almost an osmosis. On the lake shore, you’ll meet miraculous sources of water coming from the bowels of the mountain valleys and an old fisher village. If you like seafood, don’t miss eating at one of the restaurants here. Once reached the town of Cagnano Varano, go for a stroll in the Cavuto, the picturesque old town and have a drink at the old cafè beside the gate of the baron’s palace.
Accommodation in the town of Cagnano.
7. DAY: FROM CAGNANO VARANO TO MONTE SANT’ANGELO (45 km, 500 meters ascent)
We leave Cagnano Varano not before visiting the cave, one of the few original … St’ Michael. On today’s track, we will cross the second biggest forest of the Gargano National Park. Along the Umbra Forest, Bosco Quarto is the second green lung of the Park. Split by a terrific valley immersed in the reflexes of the emerald light filtrating through the crown of thousand-years old trees. Neither the locals know it exists such an incredible place: it’s called Valle Ragusa. Moreover, on the route you have the opportunity to visit two of the best masserie: the first is the Masseria Didattica Facenna in Carpino and the second is the Sitizzo Cooperative down Monte Sant’Angelo. You’re now crossing the Valle Carbonara, a geological fault dividing the nord from the south of the Gargano promontory. Staring up, you will see the profile of the castle of Monte Sant’Angelo, shrouded in mystery and cloud the highest city in Gargano with almost 800 meters above the sea level. You’ll climb the Angel’s mountain to get to your destination.
Accommodation in the town of Monte Sant’Angelo.
8. DAY: DEPARTURE
End of services after breakfast and departure
(The first 4 days are the same as the basic program)
5. VIESTE AND VICO DEL GARGANO (45 km, 600 meters ascent)

6. FROM VICO TO CAGNANO VARANO (45 km, 200 meters ascent)
Leaving St. Valentine’s town Vico del Gargano won’t be easy, there’s so much to discover, but the ride must go on! Today you will head in the direction of the Varano Lake. Only a narrow stripe mainland divides this lagoon from the sea, almost an osmosis. Once in the town of Cagnano Varano, go for a stroll in the Cavuto, the picturesque old town and have a drink at the vintage cafè beside the gate of the baron’s palace.
Accommodation in the town of Cagnano.
7. FROM CAGNANO V. TO RIGNANO GARGANICO (45 km, 600 meters ascent)
Today you will cross a mount dividing the Lake of Lesina and the Varano’s one, Monte Delio or, Devio, sometimes also called: it literally deviates the waters. After that, you will follow the track of an old railway, operated until 2010 by Ferrovie del Gargano, and then dismantled. We love to call this stretch Transgarganica, and btw this gives the name to the whole Transgargano route, that’s why this daily section is for us a special one. Castel Pagano is one of the most beautiful castles in Apulia, it dominates the Tavoliere of Puglia, the flat land all around Foggia, from the heights of the mountain. You continue following the itinerary connecting the Dolina Pozzatina and the Dolina Centepozzi, two impressive example of the karst geology, and finally reached the small town of Rignano Gargano, standing like a balcony overlooking the rest of Puglia. Rignano is also famous as the town of one of the most important prehistorical caverne in Italy.
Accommodation in Rignano.
8. FROM RIGNANO G. TO SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO (45 km, 500 meters ascent)
The Via Francigena is the missing link connecting the beginning and the end of the Transgargano. From Rignano you head first in the direction of the Stignano Valley, where you visit the first historical shrine along the route. Also San Francesco d’Assisi may have been there about 80o years ago. You ride past the city of San Marco in Lamis and meet another shrine full of history, still active as a convent: San Matteo. After a hour ride, you’ll find a third shrine: the sanctuary of Saint Pio. An extraordinary temple designed by the world-renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano: made only of local limestone, it stands together like drystone walls in the apulian countryside do, without any massive use of steel and cement.
Accommodation in San Giovanni.
9. FROM SAN GIOVANNI R. TO MONTE SANT’ANGELO (50 km, 600 meters ascent)
Leaving San Giovanni Rotondo you will ride through the marshes (pantano) of Sant’Egidio, the Sammichelari (t.i., the pilgrims to St. Michael) used the wash themselves in a water dwell here before getting closer to their destination. In Ruggiano you will find a picnic area with a fountain, there you can have a packed lunch, or at the abbey of Pulsano, an absolute gem of the Sacred Gargano. Today is the last day and you are climbing to Monte Sant’Angelo, where you gonna leave your bikes and go down the 86 stairs into the holy cave of Saint Michael, a UNESCO site. The yellow, red and blue feathers are the symbol of the Via Francigena del Sud, like the shell for the Santiago’s Camino, Petrus’ keys and Jerusalem Palms. You’ll discover the anecdote behind this colored icon and have an evening stroll in this fantastic atmosphere of a town that seems to come out directly from the annals of the Middle Ages.
Accommodation in Monte Sant’Angelo.

More info
The main airport in the north of Puglia is Foggia (FOG), but this serves almost only national destinations, except the flight from Munich (MUC, Germany) operated by Lumiwings from the end of May to the beginning of September.
The main airport in Puglia is Bari (120 km south of Foggia). Once you land in Bari, to continue towards the north of the Region you can choose the train or – during the tourist season – the bus, which is by far the best option. You will spend about € 30/40 per person in total for the two return trips.
>>> As we were saying, from the beginning of May to mid-October, Puglia Airbus (Puglia East to Reach) is operational: a fast bus that directly connects Gargano and the Bar Airport with four round trips per day (morning, midday, afternoon and night): for example, the bus that leaves from Bari airport stops at Manfredonia-Monte Sant’Angelo (Leclerc) after 1 hour and 40 minutes of travel, at Mattinata in 2 hours, at Vieste in 2 hours and 50 minutes, at Peschici-Vico del Gargano (Calenelle) in 3 and a half hours. Not bad? You won’t waste any more time taking the shuttle from Bari airport to Bari station and, above all, without changing from one means of transport to another.
>>> Bari Centrale train station is connected to Bari Airport by a Ferrotramviaria train (www.ferrovienordbarese.it) or by AMTAB bus (line 16): the latter costs €1 and takes about 45 minutes and passes every half hour. Afterwards, you will have to continue with a regional or Intercity train from Bari to Foggia (www.trenitalia.com). From Foggia you will continue by bus with Ferrovie del Gargano or SITA to Manfredonia, Monte Sant’Angelo or Vieste (www.cotrap.it).
Bike transport is permitted on most trains, unlike buses.
Don’t worry: if you have booked a bike rental or a tour with us, we will little by little provide you with all the information via WhatsApp.
Remember, however, that we can organize a private transfer for you: ask us for a quote!
If outdoor activities are your passion, then you’re in the right place. You can climb the cliffs, you can surf or you can dive into the sea, you can attend yoga lessons in the nature o practice trail running or orienteering. Take a look at this post.
Our area offers a rich program of cultural, artistic and historical events.
Mattinata organizes Fextra, the fest of extra virgin olive oil during the harvest (by the end of October) and the Orchidays festival during the blooming of wild orchids by the end of April (Gargano National Park has a real record for the number of different spontaneous orchids species).
Important cultural festivals also take place in Monte Sant’Angelo: such as the traditional and folk music event called Raduno dei Suonatori di Tarantella (July). Michael is a festival dedicated to heritage and spirituality (May) while Monde is a Cinema Festival (September).
As mentioned, we suggest you take it easy and enjoy at least a free day to deepen the knowledge of the place: for instance, you can visit the National Museum in Manfredonia, go for a boat excursion to the Tremiti Islands or simply go to the beach.
Still have blank days to spend in Apulia?
Our tip is to keep a couple of days free, as soon as you land in our region or before departing. The old city Bari is a wonderful medieval town, and Bari is as well easily connected by train to Matera (the Unesco site ‘I Sassi di Matera’ is stunning) and to Valle d’Itria, the valley with the city of Alberobello and the trulli. Both Matera and Alberobello are ideally destination of a one day excursion.
